Recipes from S.W. Basics' DIY Skincare Essentials

You probably know by now that we love everything about S.W. Basics and founder Adina Grigore's vision of simple, minimalist, effective skincare made with 5 ingredients or less. We are so excited to share these easy recipes from S.W. Basics' new DIY Skincare Essentials, a line of potent and effective ingredients you can use alone or with others. These recipes were inspired by Adina's bestselling book, Skin Cleanse, which we promise will change the way you think about skincare forever! Get ready for some magic: 

DIY Hydrating Treatment: 
1 heaping tablespoon aloe vera powder
1/4 cup brewed chamomile tea (cooled) or just water!

Directions:
Mix well (the aloe vera powder will take on a gel-like consistency as it rehydrates), then apply like a mask. Leave on until dry, and then feel free to rinse off if you'd like. 

DIY Face Scrub:
3 sprays rosewater 
1 teaspoon oat flour 

Directions:
Mix well in your hand and gently scrub onto face. Rinse immediately or leave on for a few minutes to dry before rinsing. 

DIY Moisturizer: 
1/4 cup shea butter
10-20 drops essential oil of your choice 

Directions: 
Mix well and then let sit at room temperature until your new, scented shea butter re-solidifies. Use on stubborn dry spots.

DIY Body Butter

The next time you run out of your favorite moisturizer, we dare you to make our DIY cream and tell us how superior it is in every way (compared to most plastic bottles of industrial garbage you can find at the drugstore.) You can essentially mix any variation of organic butters and oils and create something amazing. Most raw ingredients can be found on Amazon, at Whole Foods, or from Mountain Rose Herbs. The only supplies you need are the raw ingredients, a glass container, like a mason jar (or even a bowl!) a burner, a small pot or saucepan, and a spoon. Making homemade cream is easier than cooking dinner! Especially if you can convince someone to use it for a nice, long massage... 

INGREDIENTS: 

  • 1/4 CUP SHEA BUTTER
  • 1/4 CUP BEESWAX
  • 1/4 CUP SWEET ALMOND OIL 
  • 1/4 CUP OLIVE OIL 
  • 10 DROPS ESSENTIAL OIL OF YOUR CHOICE (OPTIONAL) 

Note: You can totally substitute the olive oil for any rich, organic oil (like sesame or jojoba or coconut or avocado oil!) 

INSTRUCTIONS: 

  1. Clean your jar, bowl, or bottle of your choice 
  2. Measure all of the ingredients (except the essential oils,) into your preferred glass container
  3. Heat a little water in the saucepan or pot, and add the closed container to it, so it functions as a double boiler (you can also add ingredients directly into a pot and slowly heat it on low, but using a double boiler approach prevents the ingredients from burning.) 
  4. Mix the ingredients as they melt together 
  5. After everything is completely melted, carefully take the jar out of the water
  6. Stir the mixture and add essential oils if you want a scented cream
  7. Let the cream cool for about an hour, or place it in the fridge to speed up the process. 
  8. For best results, shake the jar every 20 minutes until it solidifies.
